SERMON NOTES 1/29/23 TITLE The Grace of God - Part 4 - Romans 7:1-8:11 MAIN IDEA Through the power of the Holy Spirit, a believer must continue to strive to fight against sin in their lives. OUTLINE 1. The Passing of the Law (Romans 7:1-6) 2. The Purpose of the Law (Romans 7:7-12) 3. The Problem with the Law (Romans 7:13-25) 4. The Perfect Fulfillment of the Law (Romans 8:1-11) APPLICATION 1. The inner person has been redeemed and set free from having to obey the desires of sin/the flesh. 2. Until we receive our new bodies, we still must contend with the effects of sin in our world and in our fallen bodies of flesh. REFLECT & DISCUSS 1. Why does Paul use the illustration of marriage? What is he trying to communicate and how does this illustration help us better understand our relationship with Jesus Christ? 2. According to 7:4-6 what are the ramifications of this new relationship with Christ? 3. What does Paul mean when he says that we are now released from the law (7:6)? What does he not mean? Are we now free to live any way we please? 4. Paul says that our sinful desires were aroused by the law when we were unbelievers. Does this mean the law of God is a bad thing? How does the Bible view the law of God (Psalm 119:18, 97, 136, 165)? Why is the law important (Romans 3:19-21, 31, 7:12)? 5. What kind of relationship do believers now have with the law? 6. How does Romans 7:6 clarify for us Romans 6:14? 7. According to verse 6, what role does the Holy Spirit play in all this?
